A very sweet picture book about all the ways that families can love each other and show each other love. Lots of representation throughout!

I loved reading this book as part of school RSE training. It's so simple and normalises different types of families and home circumstances through simple depictions of daily life and nurture. Excellent for EYFS/KS1.

For: readers looking for a loving book about all types of families.

Possible red flags: LGBTQ+ representation.

This is such a cute book that shows the diversity of families. I absolutely loved the illustrations and feel this is an excellent children's book.

Love Makes a Family portrays the many smalls moments that make a family a family, such as “love is baking a special cake,” portraying a birthday, and “love is knowing where everything is,” with a mom finding lost toys. The statements need to be paired with the images to flesh out exactly what the broad or vague sentiment implies. For example, “love is making things better again” is a great, important statement, but paired with the picture of a dad giving his crying daughter an ice cream cone, there is more depth and clarity. The standout characteristic of this book is truly the art. The pictures are bright, bold, and lively, and depict diverse families (for examples, older parents, Black muslim families, a single dad, gay parents here and there) without emphasis or tokenism. Families simply are. The book ends with a resounding “love makes a family!” Discriminatory readers may complain that this book tries to normalize different types of families, whereas the rest of us will simply appreciate the emphasis on ordinary moments of love that families experience, creating a wholesome, kind, and calm environment for babies to dwell in as they observe this board book.
