The first half is only okay, but the second half, where the characters live with the consequences of their actions, is a huge improvement. Definitely different in tone from the Pippi Longstocking books, which were more whimsical and explicitly jokey. This had more of a fairy tale atmosphere, but with no less charm of its own.

Very cute story! I would have loved to read this when I was a kid. I think it is a charming story even if you read it as an adult. I will definitely read this story to my children some day.

My father read this book to me in my childhood and now I got to read it to my daughter. After Harry Potter she was sceptical, but soon she could not get enough. It brought back memories for me and I enjoyed it tremendously.

I especially love that the book really shows complicated emotions and relationships. There are good times and bad times, agreements and disagreements in the relationships between the kids, between adults, between parents and their children and between enemies and friends. It is a great way for kids to learn, and adults to remember, that it is not all roses and how important it is to work through disputes, grief and anger. To forgive, to care and to love.

Lindgren is also great at making you feel like you are in the forest with its striking descriptions of scandinavian nature, and equally great at putting you in the mood of the characters and making you care. My daughter was also really hooked on the details of to teenage kids trying to survive in the woods on their own. It is a great childrens book, and so much more!

Absolute Empfehlung!

this was such a cute story; read chapters of it to my daughter before bed and she really enjoyed hearing about Ronia and Birk’s adventures in Matt’s Wood.
