As Sombras de Longbourn

3.61 AVERAGE

Perhaps not a fair assessment but I couldn't get past page 2. Irritating voice, way too much description, and, since I love Pride and Prejudice, reading the below-stairs stories in a voice I dislike isn't going to work for me. Sorry to not give Baker a better shot, but something turned me off to it very quickly.

This is really very good, but I am deducting a star for the way the narrative voice is at odds with the secrets that are revealed very slowly.

It took me a long time to get into this book's groove. It wasn't very interesting initially because all the characters ever did was clean up after the more familiar characters in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. It never occurred to me that our beloved Elizabeth Bennet or Jane had a slush pot under their bed for the housemaids to dump. My privilege was the one thing that floated through my mind as I read. I questioned why I was more comfortable reading about the upper class than the thoughts and activities of the servants. I was disappointed in how little Elizabeth, Jane, or any of the Bennets cared about their servants beyond their personal needs. All in all, I enjoyed this book more than I expected to.

Total snooze fest.

started off strong then I lost interest.

The downstairs to the upstairs of "Pride and Prejudice" was a nice read and probably more accurate than I want it to be. I so wished that someone of the downstairs ilk would find a way to stand up to the Bennets, Bingleys and Darcys and say "Hey! We deserve more! But, I guess Georgian England is a little too early in the history of the world to see that happen. I did enjoy the interweaving of the P&P events into the story of Longbourn and it was a truly believable story.

i really enjoyed this and thought she did a great job of using "pride and prejudice" as a backdrop for an original idea.

Starts off slow and miserable, but builds up into a nice (but conventional) gothic romance. The sparse P&P references add a bit of flavour but it mostly stands as its own plot.
