4...No twist or suspenseful turns to this novel...Even with knowing what had happened I found myself reading to find out the how and why!? A very sensitive subject matter for me as a mother BUT I last through...Will check out the next novel.in this series...
Quick read, but not hardly worth it. Sure there is the pull of trying to figure out what really happened, but there is also a sense of "I don't really care". I could have walked away from this book without finishing and never looked back, which is usually difficult for me as I like to finish books in case it ends up having a great ending. Oh well. This book isn't terrible, it's just not that great either.

Generally, I have few highlighted sections with each thriller. With this, there were none. It doesn't mean it is a bad book, I guess 'it's good' but nothing memorable. However I remember Epigraph of the book addressed to reader by author as following -
In big trials - notorious and terrible crimes that make headlines - I have found myself watching the wife of the man in the dock and wondering what she really knew, or allowed herself to know.
You will have seen her too, on the news. You may have to look carefully, but she's there, standing quietly behind her man on the court steps. She nods and squeezes his arm as he protests his innocence because she believes in him.
But what happens when the camera are packed away and the world stops watching?
I feel frustrated couple of times because instead of searching for missing girl, the author started describing mundane tasks of everyone (I mean everyone's) life. But then I realized, it is cold case anyway and that reminder was enough for me to keep going. The problem with writing about side characters is that - there is lot of speculations - not anything solid or trustworthy to latch on. It takes longer to simply unravel the mystery.
I rarely read anything with 'child abuse' in it because I simply cannot stomach it. The concept is far too revoluting for me to digest so when author takes effort to not make it very gory, I appreciate. It doesn't make the said topic less horrifying but as a reader I can handle it that way.
I like Barton's work and will read her other books as well...

This is a very good debut book and I look forward to reading more by this author. It kept me guessing and I didn't work out if the wife knew the truth. I would definitely recommend it.

This one just.... didn't do it for me. I finished it, and that's why I'm giving it three stars.
a few friends of mine have told me how much they loved this book, so I apologize for not agreeing with you. it was... okay at best. maybe I watch too much Investigation Discovery. Maybe I've read one too many thrillers, but getting through this one was more of a chore than anything. don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the writing and the style the author brought to the table, but as far as plot and suspense factor, it just wasn't there for me.
I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, or some massive twist to come about and make this exciting as a read, but that never happens. the plot and characters are pretty predictable right from the get-go. If you've had any experience with mystery, thrillers, murders, who-dun-it, etc... you'll know to just keep everyone as a suspect, and you'll figure it out pretty quickly. The pieces of the puzzle fall into place with almost no hiccups throughout the journey.
