“In all this world there is nothing so beautiful as a happy child.”

Eh. This book was ok. I liked it for what it was, but not as much as I wanted to. And I'll admit, it bothered me that there was no mention of Christ is this christmassy tail. Not sure why I expected there to be, but i anticipated some reference. Interesting to think about where Santa came from and how he came to be. I still love Santa and believe in him just a little bit- so that is good I suppose.

A cute classic Christmas story!

It provides the journey of Santa Claus and answers a lot of questions about the jolly old man.

It is clearly written during an earlier time, but that makes the charm even better.

I would have loved this as a kid!

As good of a background for Santa as I've ever heard.

Some of my favorite Christmas movies as a kid were the adaptations of this that came on TV, and returning to this story as an adult was a delight. Definitely a new book to try and read each December!

Having read it as a little child, this book was my first encounter (long before The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) with Lyman Frank Baum. And I totally loved it! (still do)
The mythological setting and characters seemed very plausible to me, and the logical explanations of the details added some depth. The nymph Necile, the Queen of the Fairies and all the forest folk enchanted me.
As I have been bothering my head with philosophical questions since young age, I really loved the part at the beginning of the novel, where young Santa - upon witnessing all human suffering - asks Ak (Master Woodsman of the World) what the meaning of live is. And his answer - as long as a human is alive, there is meaning; and the wise one will do his/her best to help others. Because by doing so, one may live forever.
