As soon as I finished reading Sea of Tranquility, I did something I’ve never done before: I turned around and started reading it again.

4.5 stars. The whole concept of this plot plus the characters and points of references from her previous novels, Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel are thought provoking. The metaphysics of time travel and the interwoven different eras are done seamlessly to where I never had to wonder and guess the hows or whys in each part. I only wish the author had written more in depth about the other characters and the results of their interactions with Gaspery. I felt most of the novel centered on Olive and Gaspery. The effects on Olive’s life during the tour and after the pivotal meeting with Gaspery was very in depth so I had hoped for more of the after effects with Edwin (which, his was more so than that of the others) Paul, Mirella and Vincent. While most of it was tied up by the end, I was still left craving more. All in all, I am a huge fan of St. John Mandel’s writing and will read anything she writes.

I really enjoyed it. The author does not reveal the true conflict of the story until we’ll into it, but nevertheless pulls in the reader with a number of interesting vignettes, seemingly only loosely related. Later these are cleverly pulled together into one cohesive narrative. Clever storytelling along with good character and plot development.

One of those books you immediately have to reread after finishing it. My only gripe is that Gaspery wasn’t a particularly interesting character…but also I couldn’t put it down! A strong 4/5 ⭐️
