The theme of class was what drew me in and what kept me reading. The other plot lines (bar the trial) and the very detailed descriptions did not catch my attention at all.

Overall I think it was an OK book with some good and bad cliches.

Excellent story, but also really brutal on the emotions. Honestly, it probably deserves five stars--you can see how this is the author who later went on to write [book:North and South|156538]--I just can't take the constant death and illness and poverty without it lessening my enjoyment somewhat.
