I had very conflicting feelings about this one. Alan Moore is once again telling the story of a single man who has a perspective well beyond anyone else in his time. I think Moore writes a very incisive depiction of the way we mythologize the violence that men do to women. But there is also a desire to make this about a one twisted killer and also a commentary on the violence to come in the 20th century and which leave some moments feeling less in line with the rest of the story. Like Gull's exclamation that he is saving Kelly by killing her come off as a bad serial killer trope. Eddie Campbell's moody artwork is wonderful to look at throughout. Also was captivated by the intimidating artwork that he draws.

From Hell is one of my all-time favourites and among the books that I've reread most often, and I'll admit to feeling a bit of trepidation about this colourized version because I'm a bit weird when it comes to changes made in the media properties that I love - Han shot first and anything else is blasphemy and all of that, right? I am happy to report that my fears were completely unfounded and that I really think the experience was improved in a lot of ways and the colours, fairly muted throughout which worked for the setting, brought a vividness and clarity that added to the horror and the telling of the overall themes.

Honestly, at this length and at this point in my life, this is just too much of a chore for me to finish. The artwork is ugly, the city is disgusting, the people are grotesque and the killings are, well...
I can appreciate the research and scope of the work but I cannot call this a book that everyone needs to read. There just isn't enough to make it worth the slog.

it just couldn’t hook me in and felt quite undeservedly sexual too fast in the book

This is essentially an exploration of a theory about the Jack The Ripper murders. It is more of a conspiracy theory involving the royal family. I absolutely loved the parts about the free masons as I love anything about secret societies. The characters were interesting enough. The pace was pretty steady, with some slow build ups in other areas. The part I did not like so much is the gore. Not a fan of gratuitous violence. Although truth be told, I don't know how you can tell this story without some degree of violence. But all the same, that is the only thing that lowered the ranking for me. I give this one a 4/5.
