This is the X-men that I grew up with. Reading it now? Soap opera for boys (or at least this boy). Long before Smallville, Claremont had figured out teen-angst mixed with kicking butt. Surprised just how talky this stuff is today. And dude, I don't think Claremont can go a page without a thought-bubble.

Things start picking up again here. Storywise, you get newly badass Storm, Rogue joins the team, the Brood, Wolverine takes a wife, and the mystery of Jean Grey doppelganger Madelyne Pryor begins. And you get some really fantastic artwork from Paul Smith and John Romita, Jr., to boot. Still doesn't quite hit the dizzying heights of the later Claremont/Byrne run, but it's easy to see why the book continued to gain fans. Good stuff abounds.

Delicious nostalgia fix with some of my all-time favorite X-Men issues.
