very slow book, especially at the beginning, but i enjoyed it anyway. Robin Hobb’s characters are so wonderfully written and the dynamics we got to see in this third book were even better crafted than in the previous installments. i absolutely loved the “quest” element that was very dominant in the story, and i found the ending flawless. i will absolutely be reading the other RotE books.

This might be my new favorite fantasy trilogy. I feel like Fitz is a real person, and more than that a friend who I want to literally shake as he makes stupid decisions (but not in a way that makes reading this unenjoyable). At the beginning of this book I was getting so mad at him my partner suggested this book might be bad for my mental health ahahah. But I love it. I love the Wit and the Skill, I love Nighteyes, the ending with the Elderlings was so satisfying and so sad and so wondrous and fantastical. I don’t quite know how to review this because it doesn’t feel like it’s over yet. It feels like I’ll just continue to read this until forever (and to be fair there are 6 more books with Fitz but I don’t think that’s affecting this mood that much). I can’t believe that this isn’t even the best trilogy of the bunch (according to my fellow booktubers). Like how could it get better?

Robin Hobb’s writing is like drinking tea, it’s so accessible and descriptive and yet doesn’t feel like she’s holding your hand at all. There were some twists in this third book that were SO good I didn’t even know to expect the twist and yet it made everything fall into place in the story. The interwoven storyline is just so masterful. I love these books. I feel attached to them in a way I can’t recall feeling about a book series in the same way. I’ve never felt like a character is as real as Fitz. Like I’ll wake up and have a text message from him on my phone. I cried, I laughed, I gasped, this whole this is completely masterful.

Wow. I really loved this whole trilogy but it was a challenging read. Fitz never really catches a break and even though it all makes sense in the story, it's hard to see him face betrayal after betrayal, and lose so much. After I finished, my first thought was "that was one of the best series that I will never ever read again". However I will say the books are worth reading. Fitz is an interesting character and he's very consistent in his behavior. I think my favorite character aside from Fitz is probably Nighteyes or the Fool. I saw there were more books that follow the Fool and I definitely plan on reading those someday (once I emotionally recover from reading this series).
