One of the things i really valued about the second book was the way that not everything went to plan for Fitz. It made the plot hard to predict and enjoyable to follow along with. This book took that a step too far i think. Fitz’s plans failed so often that it circled back into predictability. It was hard to root for any of his plans when i knew that he would be thwarted. It was realistic, but the romantic in me wants the underdog to catch a break. I love the way that Robin Hobb writes women and i wish we could’ve seen more of that in this book. We get glimpses of women being cool and incredible and brave but Fitz is so focused on his own woes (of which he has plenty) that the women and other side characters fall to the background. This is (somewhat surprisingly) remedied a bit by Nighteyes and his building of a pack. (I particularly loved the audiobook narrator’s tone whenever the wolf talked about pack).
This momentum is, of course, dashed upon the rocks when the found family separates at the end of the book. I’m excited to see how it plays out in the later series, but disappointed in the meantime. One last thing on the ending—I hate list epilogues. The monotonous listing of events that occur after the final action leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I have high hopes that future books may expound on these events, but just in the context of this book, i was annoyed.

3.5 stars!

This was a good ending to the trilogy. I still really love FitzChivalry. But I got to admit this was one difficult book to read. The slow pacing, I had already expected. But I didn't think a fantasy book could be this emotionally draining. No, no one of importance died in this book. But I ache for the characters all the same, especially for our main character, Fitz. He is the epitome of loneliness. I read this book and the whole time I witness his ordeals, all I wanted was for him to just find his happiness. It was hard to the point I took a break after reading halfway through the book because I felt sorry for FitzChivalry, I felt sorry for the characters. After reading this trilogy, I know Robin Hobb's endings are usually very satisfying. But I would also admit that they also end in a very melancholic note.

If you want a character driven high fantasy trilogy with characters who have very human emotions, this is the trilogy for you because damn this characters are incredible. You don't necessarily stay for the action-packed plot but you stay for the characters.

This one reads a lot slower until the end of the book again where so much happens in the last 140 pages that it feels rushed and some things glazed over after 2 books of build up (not sure if this trilogy is done yet). Overall the trilogy as a set is great, a bit plodding in parts but the characters make up for it. I grew to enjoy the wolf a bit more in this book. It left me wanting to know more about the wit and skilling so perhaps that will be in another book. Solid 3 stars for the series. Recommended for adventure and fantasy readers who like to dive into other realms when they read.
