just a little too slow for me. i found myself really struggling to get though it because of the writing style also. but the story was interesting to me and i wanted to see it through.

The longer it went, the less I enjoyed it. The history of Singapore was interesting. Every character did their best considering what they went through. “Progress” is complex.

Siok Mei wondered often about these enterprising forefathers, the decision they made to cut their children off from their own intimate past... How had they felt when their grandchildren were born and given Ang Moh named that they themselves could not pronounce?
Together they were two trees planted some unreachable distance apart, whose shadows were gently intertwined.
Long had it been a habit for Siok Mei to resist giving in to love, let alone changing her life for it. To do so, would be to admit that her parents had not loved her enough to change theirs.
There are so many quotable portions. Heng's writing is remarkably capable of showing all aspects of an event while also being incredibly LUSH! But my favorite moment has to be here:
When Siok Mei is pregnant and she is worried she will be a bad mother and Ah Boon's reply is " I understand. I also believe you can do it."
