“Your emotional bullshit is fucking with the sweet potato pie”

The best line of dialogue ever courtesy of Eddie. Nixon and Charlie were definitely my favorite couple/story in the series so far.

Second Chance Romance

I took quite a gap between reading Book 2 in this Serendipitous Love series and reading this installment (Book 3). Second chance romance is a trope I tend to enjoy but this was a little more complex because there were all sorts of cheating-adjacent complications running through this book. For a romance purist who has no cheating as a hard line, this book will push you and I’m not sure whether I was down with the conclusions it made around that subject although ultimately, I did enjoy the book.

The premise is that Charlie and Nixon were childhood sweethearts until a betrayal broke them up and spiraled Charlie into a rebound marriage and a move across the country to start a new life. Now, years later, Charlie is back in town to lick her wounds after her husband has been jailed and her assets seized because he’s accused of fraud. When she meets Nixon again, sparks fly but they also bring up old hurts.

Whilst this book is a standalone in priniciple, it features characters and the “world” of the first 2 books and so you do miss out a little if you don’t know the back stories of the supporting cast. References are made so you won’t be totally lost but you lose a bit of the value and richness if you start with this book and I also think you potentially have less patience for the characters. I didn’t especially feel comfortable with the rapidity with which both characters moved on or engaged with other people after a break up, and I didn’t like the conclusions drawn from the cheating-adjacent behaviour of both parties. But this is not a cookie-cutter, black and white, perfect decisions romance. I feel like this reflected some of the messiness and complexities that can happen in a relationship. Did I love this? Not necessarily, for me it dragged a little and I’m not quite sure why I struggled to connect with it. But I do want to read the next book in the series.

Fun but not flawless, this is an excellent beach (or in my case camping trip) read. I enjoyed the way the relationship developed, and the banter was great. Nixon came in a bit too strongly for my taste, pushing into Charlie's personal space even when she refused him, but it didn't QUITE cross a line for me. I'm also a little tired of all the pregnancies in this series. It's like every relationship needs its own anchor baby to validate it. No thanks.
