I went into this book being a little cautious. Let’s be honest… the plot description screamed The Bachelor to me, and I am one who is not at all interested in The Bachelor.

But, this plot was good. There was world-building. There was politics. There was the dystopian aspect. It wasn’t entirely about romance, and I loved that.

Who knows, I may change my mind between now and when I finish this series. But at this moment, I think America Singer is the newest addition to my list of favorite book characters. I could feel so many of the emotions she was experiencing, and therefore I felt like I really connected with her. She is such a strong FMC. She thinks through decisions. She is selfless and has a grand heart for others. She’s confident in herself. She’s strong and powerful in her own way. The entire plot of her being in a situation she didn’t want to be in, surrounded by girls who did want to be there, was a very interesting plot and something I enjoyed reading.

I ultimately rated this a 4.75 simply because of something that happens toward the end of the book that I didn’t particularly like, because I think it threw a wrench in what was seemingly becoming a smoother subplot. However, America’s response to this was comforting, as it showed her admirable quality of being able to keep a level head. Overall, great book and I can’t wait to read the next!

forgot how much i eat up this type of book, like go fight for that mans hand in marriage!
America as a main character gives me absolutely nothing but i love that she rips into what is obviously going to be her future man because me too! #twinning
the only thing holding this back from probably what is actually a 4.5 star review is the rotten pacing which takes hold as soon as America leaves her home town and  arrives at the palace and (spoilers about the relationship btw dont click)
her dickhead ex boyfriend comes back into the fray right at the end and thinks he has a right to America's existence as a whole.

otherwise this book is really as i remember it, slay!

This book was most definitely enjoyable. I genuinely couldn’t put it down and I am now writing this at 1:30am lol. It’s a fast lighthearted read and was just a good time. Technically, this book is not very good. It’s not bad but America can be very “not like other girls” and the writing certainly isn’t anything special. But, oh my god, it is so entertaining. It was cringey and funny and frustrating. Definitely something I would have gotten more out of if I read it when I was a bit younger but Maxon still got me giggling and shit so it’s fine 🤪 mostly what I got out of this is that friends to lovers is just the superior trope.

Men Americas hjärta tillhör någon annan.

Reread January 2023:
This book is still got to be my favorite book! I had forgotten so many details because I have read so much since then, but it still sucked me in and I didn’t want to put it down during the reread! I LOVE this book and still feel like nothing quite compares to it no matter how hard I try.

Original review from 2016:
Honestly one of the best young adult books I have read in a long time. Though it is fairly predictable it was still a major page turner for me as I read it in a day. An easy but quite enjoyable read. A good taste of sweet romance with a little action. First off, it is clean for once. Second, sex is seen as something valuable (it's not a main subject but just an observation that stuck out). Third, both the men and woman are strong characters. And finally, it's just so nice to read something refreshing and mainly light hearted. I don't read fiction often because I find it either disappointing or disheartening but this book has been a refreshing read. It would make a great TV series or movie. I want to read the next books so bad I ordered them on Amazon before I finished this book.
