It’s just Moving Pictures and Mort mashed together, but not as good as either of those already not very good entries in the series. Soul Music has the same problem Moving Pictures did of Terry wanting to play around with a subject, this time rock music, but not really having anything much to say about it.
So instead you just get this very paint by numbers plot that can mostly be worked out ahead of time if you’ve ever watched a music biopic, humor that doesn’t go much deeper than spot the reference type gags, and classic rock band names that Pratchett bends over backwards to work in to something more Discworld sounding. There’s a bit where Death says thank you to someone, and the narrator makes it a point to refer to him as the grateful Death. That’s the level of word play we’re working with here. Decide for yourself if an entire novel of that is worth a read.
