3.0

This is a genre-bending novel about a grieving Indigenous woman who was forced off of her reservation after marrying a white man. Now she lives in a neighborhood where she doesn’t feel like she belongs, is worried that her husband is keeping secrets, convinced that her newborn daughter doesn’t like her, and may be hallucinating (but is more likely suffering from mental illness). It’s a poignant tale of a woman struggling to navigate womanhood, motherhood, wifehood, and her Indigenous heritage all while living in a very white male dominated world. There is talk about/ themes on racism, sexism, addiction, genocide, missing and murdered Indigenous women, depression, grief… In other words, it’s heavy and it was kind of exhausting but not necessarily in a bad way. 3 stars for me because even though I really enjoyed some parts and enjoyed the subject matter, I didn’t enjoy all of it, mostly the space-time travel and the difficulty experienced trying to follow the narrative thread.
