Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, and Jessica Strawser for an ARC ebook copy to review. As always, an honest review from me.

My rating is actually 3.5 stars, but since there aren't half stars I always round up.

Like:
- The mystery, the secrets
- The evolution of Molly’s relationship with her husband
- The premise reminds me of an episode of Law and Order SVU

Love:
- Good representation of chronic illness/chronic pain including the lack of energy, daily pain, frustration due to inability to complete all activities, loved ones not really getting it
- Molly trying to be the best mom for her son despite her challenges and limitations

Dislike:
- The lying, deception, and almost tricking of the other people - done for a reason but sometimes it crosses the line from good intentions to protecting only yourself

Wish that:
- Some parts made more sense

Overall, a good book. I especially loved that the main character deals with chronic pain. Well, I don’t love that she’s in pain, but I like the representation. We need more books like this. However, the weird secret keeping took away from my enjoyment at times.

A great surprise to find Cincinnati as a backdrop to this story.

This was a first read for me by Jessica Strawser. I am looking forward to looking into some of her other novels even though I cannot say that I loved this one. The story line is well put together leaving no questions at the ending, but the characters were selfish, paranoid and psychotic and it made me dislike them. It took me a longer time than usual to get through this book. While I was reading it, I was into it, but the desire to continue reading it after I put it down just wasn't there.

A revisiting of friendships, marriage, heartbreak and love bring this novel together.

Molly and Liza and Molly’s marriage to Daniel are not on the up and up. Times are hard especially when you’re dealing with them while being in pain. What would you do to save a friend or a marriage in trouble?

This book had so many wonderful qualities. I truly enjoyed it! Thank you to St Martins Griffin and Jessica Strawser for the advanced readers copy of the new paperback version!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ a definite MUST read!!

A "Lifetime channel" mystery. Not terrible, not awesome, but a lighthearted mystery with a plausible ending.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a review.

Molly and Liza were long time friends who were catching up via a video chat. When Molly stepped away from her computer to help her child, Liza was shocked to see over the computer that a man dressed all in black had broken into Molly's house. Who was it? Where did he go? And why wasn't Molly more concerned about the events that happened?

I was hoping for a heart-pounding, high-paced thrilled from this point on, but the story never quite reached that level for me. There are several different story lines that provide plenty of mystery and questions and contemplation, and it draws the reader in to try to figure out what is really going on in both Liza and Molly's lives.

Let's talk about secrets. The kind of secrets that can bend and twist and turn a teeny, tiny veiled thing into a full blown nuclear bomb. Jessica Strawser has again, intricately built a twisty, complex labyrinth of emotions, pain, fear, guilt and secrets and then dropped the bomb on us once again. She makes it look so easy: to make lives look so very complicated, so real-life - and so insightful. And it explodes all over you in a mess of pieces you feverishly try to put together but cannot for the life of you figure what the heck is going on!

It starts with a simple catch-up video chat between friends while Molly's husband is out of town. Molly and Liza used to be so close, but life and distance has built a wedge, and the much needed girls-night gossip session is just starting to warm up when Molly needs to step away to answer her daughters wails from the bedroom. As Liza waits - staring at a static screen of Molly's house - she see something - or rather, someone. There's a masked intruder in Molly's house.

And what follows is so utterly confusing. Why won't Molly acknowledge what Liza saw. Why is she so mad that Liza is so incredibly concerned? And why won't she tell her husband? Cue the secrets and the emotional complexities of friendships and married life. The stresses of work, the worries over money. The struggles with pain.

These are ALL things that normal everyday people deal with in real life. You, me, Joe down the street... the way that Strawser makes you feel every single struggle, sense worry over choices made, and harbor guilt that is not your own, is a true gift in her storytelling. I savored every minute inhaling the suspense, and didn't put it down, until I had acknowledged every, single word.

Liza and Molly are childhood best friends that have drifted apart. Molly is married with a family living in Cincinnati and Liza is single and living in Chicago. After several “let’s get together” promises they finally schedule a video call to reconnect. During the call, Molly has to tend to her child and leaves the video connection open. After a short time Liza sees a masked man in dark clothes enter the house and in a panic for her friends safety calls the police. Molly does not react as expected for someone who has her house broken into and acts like it is not a big deal. Liza is worried about Molly and drives overnight to her in Cincinnati. Molly acts strange again and pushes Liza away. When Molly returns to Chicago, she finds her apartment has been destroyed in a fire and everyone on her floor did not survive. Left with little options, Liza moves to Cincinnati to stay with her brother and pregnant sister-in-law. As Liza struggles to put her life together, Molly is struggling as well. She has secrets from her husband, Daniel, not knowing Daniel has secrets of his own. Molly and Daniel’s marriage is going through a rough time. The story expands as Liza deals with the aftermath of the fire and tries to help her friends and family. Molly and Daniel struggle to deal with their secrets on their own. Can everyone come together to help?

This was my first book by this author and I struggled to get into it in the beginning. The story switched between the characters and it was a little confusing to follow. Once I got further into the book it became easier to read and I had a hard time putting it down. I read the last 3/4 of the book on a long plane trip. The book shows the struggles in a marriage or friendship are not always a what they seem. Honestly really is the best policy and can avoid a lot of misconceptions.

I would give this book 🌟🌟🌟🌟. It was a little hard to get into but grabbed your attention later on. It was very interesting to figure out everyone’s secrets. It also showed what seems like a hopeless situation is not always that.
