Really enjoyed this collection of Jack Laramie stories set in 50s Texas. The scrapes all seem low-stakes cases for Laramie, but the fact he lives out of a horse trailer, his cash-flow problems necessitate him putting his foot into every one of these five short stories, and quickly makes them high-stakes.
The stories themselves are fun, from dodgy sheriffs to snooty types putting themselves above the herd, but its the writing which really makes them all crackle. A great sense of place and time, fantastic turns of phrase, and always the anticipation everything will turn to horse manure.
