This second installment of the series is equally as good as the first. The excitement of solving the mystery of who's trying to kill who because of what, remains the same. To this end, I am impressed with Crane's power of deduction and Stephen's intuitive skills.

Speaking of these two MCs,
Crane and Stephen's relationship seemed perilous at first, especially with Crane not knowing where he stands when Stephen does his disappearing act. But we learn that Crane's concern about Stephen's detachment is unfounded as the story progresses.

The novel wouldn't be complete without disturbing descriptions of unnatural possessions so you might not want to be eating while reading this book.

Just gonna put it out there that I'm adoring Crane/Day and their romance like whoa. I *loved* Crane's vulnerability when it comes to Day. There's just something about an arrogant and domineering lord being unsure and pining-like that makes me all 😍🥹.

Day is also insecure in his own way, and there's wonderful but painful navigation in defining their relationship - but the payoff is glorious (and teary!). Their love is hot, sexy af but also sweet and tender. The mystery is great, too, a bit creepy and I enjoyed the  mentions of China, Sumatra and the lore.

Wonderful follow-up to The Magpie Lord. This one brought a full and diverse cast of secondary characters to fill out the world.

I really enjoy this series even though it's darker than her other books
