This book has two things going for it: one, it’s very fast paced and therefore easy to read in one sitting and two, it’s short, which works very well with the style of the writing.

On the other hand, I couldn’t find it in myself to care about Amanda. There’s no chance at redemption ever, she’s too far gone from page one. It’s hard to care about someone and something when there’s already no hope. Also, the constant references, pages after one another, about the demon possession scale was annoying and unnecessary. The reader can easily flip a few pages back and check them off. Lastly, because of the books, her symptoms were predictable. One symptom would be mentioned and then BAM, she’d have it.

Despite this, it was still an entertaining read, but it lacked a lot of what I enjoy in a suspenseful book.

This was…. Okay. Just okay. A bit repetitive, and just kinda felt like I was being walked through the over told motions of what felt like a very generic possession story. Nothing about it was mind boggling. It was a bit creepy perhaps, but mostly just kind of boring.

The first part of this book was creepy AF, as the protagonist tries to figure out what is happening to her. But as it continues and
Spoilershe gets more and more taken over by the demon
, it just becomes kind of sad.

Wanting not to be alone can be pretty bad sometimes.

This fast paced read is about woman who loses herself ever so subtly at first to a familiar friend. Only to find that her life is in shambles and does not resemble what she once knew. I’ve never read a possession story like this! Dark, witty, massively engrossing! Love the spiritual counselors that she encounters on the way. It’s giving Drag Me To Hell which I can’t get enough of. 8/10 on the spooky scale!

This is the kind of horror that creeps under your skin and stays there. This slim, terrifying psychological thriller is an expertly unraveling story of possession—or is it unraveling sanity?—that feels so eerily plausible it will make you question the solidity of your own mind. What makes Come Close so chilling is its groundedness. There’s no dramatic exorcist showdown, no over-the-top gore—just a creeping sense of inevitability as Amanda’s grip on herself loosens. The horror is psychological, intimate, and utterly relatable, which is what makes it so effective. Could it be a demonic force invading her body and mind? Or is Amanda simply cracking under the weight of unspoken desires and buried trauma? The ambiguity is suffocating in the best possible way.

I think that this brief horror novel does a good job detailing the progression involved in a demonic possession. It really gets into the head of the person being possessed. However, it never really addresses why that person was chosen, and how. Was it related to her childhood? I found it all unclear. Also, she says she can feel the demon yet still has all these blackout moments where she has no memory - what is she doing then? And where are the police for most of the book? It left too much unanswered to be a satisfying read.

I really enjoyed the way this was written. Was certainly not as scary as the reviews led me to believe, but it was it was still an entertaining read. I unfortunately didn’t find anything special about this one.
