This was just not my kind of book. The humour is very flat, lots of little details included just for the sake of quirkiness. Having the author wink at me all the time is exhausting. I didn't find the main character compelling, pretty classic man writing a sad single woman.

I liked it- I really like the author, but I'm convinced the subsequent books will be better.

Kinda just forgot i was reading it, it was cool tho

What a wonderful book! As I was reading, I found myself laughing aloud at all the literary references, and wondering how many MORE references were simply whizzing by over my head. Fforde's writing style is wonderful and the story itself is quite entertaining. I find that I don't have much to say about it, but I'm glad I've picked up a few more of his books recently and am looking forward to reading them all!

I liked the idea of the book I just found it very slow and was disappointed in the lack of character development. The pacing ruined the "tense" adventure part of the book for me, the author just droned on too long and had too many "filler" pages after a twist or advancement in the plot. Once the villain had advanced in his plans I wanted that story line to play out more steady and fast not be side lined by the main characters date night.

How have I never written a review for this book before? I love it soooo much!

Actually, I probably read this the first time long ago before I was even using Goodreads. I notice there's no DATE in here for when I read this? Hm. I probably first read it sometime in like... I'm going to guess 2005-2008, but it could have been later, but not so much later that I was doing derby.... Let's say 2006.

For some reason I can no longer remember, I decided to re-read this series this year. It 100% holds up as funny in that irreverent and sort of absurd way that I like best. It reminds me a bit of The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but with less "dear reader" fourth wall jokes (although, I think the series might go there eventually because it's super meta). I think I read the first like 4-5 books in this series then crashed out during a long reading slump, but I kept buying them. I'm excited now that I'll get to see how the series ends! I think I own them all.

Hundred percent I'm going to recommend this to my dad. :)
