Highly inventive but poorly paced. It took me over a month to read this. I don’t want to go into the numerous problems I had with it but would like to say that Fforde’s Shades of Grey is an absolute blast. If you had the same experience I had with this book, I’d say you should still check out Shades of Grey. It’s one of those books you’ll tell your friends about and then become envious that they’ll get to read it for a first time.
This was such a fun read! I thoroughly enjoyed this one, fast paced, great characters, rich in imagination, everything I want in a great book. A HUGE five star recommendation from me!

Clever, amusing, and exciting. If you love literature and wordplay this is the book for you!
A friend recommended this series. I found it compelling enough to read all of the books and want to know what would happen next but I don't know how "good" the writing is. The series takes place in a parallel universe and involves time travel but sometimes I think the writer is either trying to be witty by pretending certain things didn't happen or he can't remember the plot lines of his other books. There is a whole lot os constant suspension of belief needed to enjoy this series as I suppose you must decide that regardless of something that happens in one book you must realize that the author will pretend it never happened...
I love when books play with the concept of reading and literally falling into books or living in a world where characters live. Especially when they do it well. This one is so fun and Thursday Next is a great character.

I liked this, but I must admit that I don't know enough about the books to REALLY love it like I know other people do.

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde is the first novel in the Thursday Next series. Thursday is a literary detective in the (British) Special Operations Network (SO-27). This fantasy includes supernatural villains and time travelers (SO-12). Are you wondering about literary detectives? In this world, characters can leave their novel, and real people can enter novels and change the story. For example, when Jane Eyre is kidnapped, the story stops at that point. Thursday’s job is to set everything straight.
If you think you might be interested in literary humor and mystery, join Thursday on her adventure with Currier Bell, Charles Dickens, and William Shakespeare, who may or may not have written some plays.
