This book was extremely interesting. It's Earth. It's in England. It's the 1980s. But there are a lot of things that are somewhere between a little askew and absolutely bonkers.
It's somewhere between science fiction and alternate history. Parts of it are laugh out loud hilarious. Parts of it are heart wrenching. And all of it is told perfectly straight in a way the British have perfected.
There's time travel, werewolves, vampires, the army, literature references, dodos, and paparazzi. It's a slow read because there is so much packed into every passage. Sometimes the plot drags on. Sometimes it's hard to keep track of what is actually happening.
But I'm excited to read book 2!

I think as an English major I am contractually obligated to like this book, lol. Lots of literary allusions and discussions. I didn’t love it, but I did like and enjoy it!

3.5 stars. This book ended better than it began. I'm still not sure about it though.
I wanted to like this more than I actually did. The writing and storytelling failed to live up to the interesting premise. Too often the book is trying to be quirky for its own sake. This is especially true for the haphazard worldbuilding, which alternates between being humorous and grating.
It's still a quick and reasonably entertaining read for most of its duration despite the flaws.
