Fun and absurd. The idead of a Rocky-Horroresque Richard the III production was a hoot.

I could not finish this book. The idea is neat and I was excited for it, but the writing is just so random and the style irritated me. I wanted to edit it and eventually that overcame any joy I had reading it. Alas, Thursday, I wish you luck on your future adventures.

My husband LOVED this book...the entire series, in fact. Guess I'm not smart enough. If there's a plot, I'm not following it and after 100 pages I've been given no reason to care about any of the characters.

This was soooo much fun! I tend not to enjoy fantasy, but this is realistic enough that I could suspend my disbelief and truly enjoy. Thursday Next is a detective specializing in crimes against literature. For those of you who are readers of the classics, you will enjoy this more than most, I imagine. The plot and subplots are filled with humor and fun references to technology. If you did not know this was written in 2000, you would think this was inspired by Harry Potter and Jason Bourne. In the middle of book two of this seven book series now.

The next book might be better, but my biggest issue with the book was that it wasn’t a mystery as advertised. It’s a crime book for sure. There are some good sci-fi parts as well. However, it doesn’t really have any mysterious elements the audience can solved. You follow Thursday as she tracks down the book’s villain. It isn’t even a “Howdunnit” either as there isn’t some trick to revealing the criminals. Also, the romance elements were bad. Thursday’s character is pretty good, which makes me give the next in the series a chance, but dear lord… for the all the story parallels, Landen is NO Rochester. For being written in 2001, the romantic elements make this book seem like it was written in the 60s (not even the 80s when it’s based).

An alternate universe with villans that threaten literary history and promote war.
Colourful characters, wacky sense of humour
Creative and amusing. Reader should be familiar with Literature like Jane Eyre, Shakespeare , and Dickens for maximum enjoyment

so much book-geek fun in a ripping plot.

Clever, brilliant, fun read! I love Fforde's style of writing and his humor.
