A Jane Eyre eset

This is such a delightful read. I was thoroughly entertained and impressed by the creativity of this story. I think it's definitely worth reading. I can tell that this is an "adult novel" compared to the YA I've been reading and it's a nice refresher to escape from the trend in YA to perhaps have some drama, self crises, and passionate feelings - if I'm going to overgeneralize and be critical. So this storyline felt more mature and sophisticated. It doesn't dwell on identity issues or relationship drama. It's just pragmatic and funny. Thursday is a delightful and perceptive character which made me like her a lot. The world she lives in is fantastic and original with lots of engaging elements of sci fi. Honestly, I just loved reading the novel and I'm totally willing to read sequels.

The Eyre Affair has a really interesting premise. While I enjoyed the idea of being able to travel into beloved books, I thought the story suffered in some parts. The pacing dragged, and after finishing the book, I wonder why Fforde bothered with some of the story in the first half of the book. Clearly the second half of the book is what he wanted to tell.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading the book, though.

I absolutely loved this book! From start to finish I got truly caught up in the adventures of Thursday Next and the Special Ops crews. I also thought the character names were fantastic, and very funny! My only minor criticism would be that in parts it read like a sequel book - but there is no prequel to it. Some parts of the alternate history, I felt, could have been better introduced (or maybe I just needed a little more detail on them), but this is just a minor point and didn't detract from the story in the least.
adventurous funny fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Loveable characters: Complicated

The storyline, horrible. The characters? Amazing, the only reason it gets 2 instead of 1 stars and why I didn't DNF.

It feels weird that this has been a favourite series of mine since the beginnings and despite several re-reads, I never got round to write a review about it.

Or maybe it isn't weird at all, considering this is a book by Jasper Fforde, The Great Genre-Bender.

I also understand that this book can be a dream or a nightmare come true of a literary nerd, depending on your POV.

I still remember the day I got this as a birthday present. It was a truly happy day. Thank You, Alan, for thinking me crazy enough to appreciate this to the full and boy, did I just do that!

Loved it. Will write review soon.

Fun, fast paced, clever characters and plot. A joy to read

A very engaging alternate-history / fantasy detective. Jasper Fforde creates a unique premise for Thursday Next, and carries it through marvellously.

Well written, with a lot of internal references to literary classics. This is a book for people who love books.

This is a bizarre and delightful book. Imagine an alternative universe where time travel exists, literature profoundly influences the world, and dodo birds have somehow been cloned. Now throw in a dastardly villain who wants to ruin Jane Eyre (for fun!) and a heroine detective who is working night and day to stop him.

It took me 100 pages to get into this book. The premise and world is so bizarre and the reader is just thrown in, so it was hard to be invested initially. However, as the plot develops I found myself thoroughly enjoying the book and looking forward to delve in each night. I'm blown away by Fforde's creativity.

4/5

3.5/5

This is my third time trying to finish this book, and it worked!

This book is set in 1985, 2016, and whenever Jane Eyre was written, but it's not about time travel. It's set in a world where people care so much about books to the point of having a police branch dedicated to them.
It wasn't perfect, not the 5/5 inspiration everyone claimed it'd be. It was good, though. I'd totally read book 2 at some point.
