this was such a light and welcome read since i was on a streak of heavier reads with women and their downward spirals (days of abandonment and the bell jar). i love the premise and the characters are all generally loveable! iona iverson is such a character and a mood, and i think she's a large part of what makes this book great (and funny).
im such a sucker for found family storylines, and as someone who advocates for the use of public transport, this book was very me-coded. so lovely seeing how all of them are changed for the better, help each other out, and end up forming genuine connections :") might be a bit too cheesy or feel good for someone but idc i love love love this book!!!

Very easy lighthearted read
4 ⭐️ this was such a perfect and cozy comfort read!
at first it can feel that our characters are a Bit cartoonish/stereotyped, but as the story progresses their character arcs become much more deep and complex than just Rich Asshole Investment Bro or Eccentric Old Lady. most of the story takes place on the train and watching them interact and become unlikely friends and have positive influence on each other’s lives was so delightful :) most of the characters are definitely quirky and the scenarios they find themselves in can be silly and over the top, but it’s done so excellently that it makes you giggle and kick your feet in the air, not roll your eyes. the witty british humor was a cherry on top (most of the time. sometimes it felt mean and laughing-at-someone’s expense. definitely some fatphobic undertones of “haha fat person funny”, but they didn’t leave a lingering negative impression on my reading).
don’t want to spoil any of the plot lines in detail, but i loved getting to know our characters and rooting for them as they dealt with their personal struggles and supported one another. iona and bea’s beautiful and heartfelt storyline touched me especially deeply + it was so fun to read about them being lesbian icons in their youth <3 it was the gem of this story for me.
i love stories about unlikely friends and in this aspect it reminded me of anxious people by fredrik backman (but clare pooley’s writing style and tone is way less moralistic and doesn’t feel like the book is talking down to you), so if you liked anxious people (as a whole or minus the tone) - you will love this. if you loved the seven husbands of evelyn hugo by taylor jenkins reid - you will love this. highly recommend to anyone looking for a fast-paced, sweet, life-affirming story that also deals with heavier topics with compassion and humor.
