Nell Flynn, FBI agent, and her father, a detective, never had much of a relationship. Their home, in Suffolk County, is where her mother was murdered when she was 7 years old. Since then, she and her father never had much of a relationship, but he dies in an accident so she returns home. She reunites with his police buddies who have always been like family to her. But when she becomes involved with the last case her father worked, the murder of several young Latina women, she begins to question everything she thought she knew about her father and the death of her mother. She also begins to question the motives of the detectives that she loves like family.

Girls Like Us is fast paced quick read. I felt like Nell was a relatable character and her need to solve the case and understand her father was intriguing for me as the reader. She was strong, independent, and determined. I loved the women in different parts of the field who would not be limited by the men in power above them. I was hooked from the very beginning! This was the first Christina Alger book I read but I’ll definitely read more!

I found Girls Like Us challenging to get into. The beginning seemed fairly slow, and it wasn’t until 150 pages in that my interest piqued. I felt the ending was a bit abrupt, and the overall plot felt somewhat outlandish. Personally, I’m not particularly drawn to 'bad cop' narratives, although I admit I didn’t initially read the summary, so that’s on me. However, I appreciated the strong female character and the intricacies of the murder case. Despite not being fully immersed in the story, I still recommend it, as my experience is in the minority on Goodreads. Fans of police procedurals should check this one out!
