-BOOK REVIEW-
Sweet Vengeance by Viano Oniomoh

Monster romance set in Nigeria? With a tall, bisexual, fat positive FMC that's determined to reclaim her body and bent on vengeance?
Delicious.

Joy summons a demon to help her exact revenge against a man who physically assaulted her. Enter Malachi - purple skin, horns, wings, tail, and magical abilities. Their attraction is immediate. Together they haunt Joy's rpst, drawing out his distress, reveling in his fear, and exploring physical intimacy as Joy takes back control of her body and pleasure. Their feelings reach a pinnacle after Joy's vengeance, and their contract, is complete. Acknowledging that their feelings may be too much too fast, they briefly part to reflect on what to do next.

There is a lot of story packed into under 200 pages. Sweet Vengeance also deals with some very heavy topics, so do not skip over the content and trigger warnings.

A Beautifully written,  steamy story about vengeance, grief, trauma, and reclaiming one’s power and sense of self. The author’s talent transcends the erotica genre. I liked that this was a majority black-African cast and there was social commentary about Nigerian culture, politics, and societal expectations on women throughout this book. Reminded me stylistically of Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche’s works.

I like that the demon is the one who relinquished control. Through her deal with him, Joy finds power over her own body again - and over his. For 200 pages this was enjoyable, but this deserved to be longer due to the fantasy element.
I would’ve liked to understand the demon aether Magic , her Aunt's Magic and her Aunt's relationship with Klaus. Also I would've enjoyed seeing more of Joys relationship with her demon after she gives her Soul to him. One thing though, in a book about trauma and self-empowerment, it was weirdly ironic that Joy decided to kill Iyore’s rapist without telling her. Iyore doesn't get agency over her traumatic experience which goes against what the book seems to be about. But alas.

4.5 stars - really good, end was a bit rushed.

This was a charming little novella, a contemporary fantasy set in Nigeria, but with sexy demons in it. The demon was surprisingly cute and sweet and not your typical brooding possessive dark and mysterious type. The fmc is also not your typical image of a romance heroine, she's tall, fat, Black, and all sexy at it. The reader can easily get behind the revenge plot since it tackles
Spoilerthemes of rape and sexual abuse towards women in a place that often leaves those women dismisses and disbelieved.
The length is perfect, preventing it from being too bloated. The editing is good - I haven't seen jarring typos unlike in many other self-pubs.

My only criticism is that despite being dual pov there's basically no voice difference between povs, and that because it's a novella everything is a bit too short and too easily wrapped up,
Spoilerthe whole revenge plot went without much twists and complications in it.
