I was thrilled to realize I could explore the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise further with the subsequently released graphic novels.

This is the first graphic novel in the lineup. If you enjoyed the “filler” episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender, you will enjoy this graphic novel that explores more in-between moments of the main plot.

Without spoiling anything, there are some aspects of characters that were nice to see. If you are reading it on Libby like me, be prepared to be constantly zoomed in. I do not believe I need glasses / maybe hardly need them, and it was impossible to read it without zooming in.

A critique I have is the art is wildly inconsistent. There are two chapters that immediately come to mind, one featuring Azula, Mai, Tai Lee, and Zuko and another featuring Aang and Sokka, where the proportions of the character’s faces are so wildly off it was distracting. In the Zuko et al. chapter, I actually didn’t realize who I was looking at until I recognized Zuko’s scar in the first few panels.

Overall though, this is an extremely light read. Good for maybe 10 year olds. I understand me at 26-years-old was not the intended audience, but I do wish there was a bit more substance and drawn out fight scenes. I still recommend reading it though if you are a big fan, especially for the art of the series at the end of the book.
