I received this advanced reader copy through LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers. I often like a coming-of-age memoir and this one provides a perspective from someone who is the daughter of Korean immigrant parents and is straddling two cultures, never really feeling like she belongs, never quite Korean and never quite American. She also must navigate her mother’s elevated expectations for success while battling, initially, undiagnosed mental illness and her own desire to live a life on her own terms. I liked this one, I just would have liked to have more about the mother-daughter relationship and reconciliation as Song grew older. But maybe she wasn’t ready to share that with readers.

Docile: Memoirs of a Not-So-Perfect Asian Girl by Hyeseung Song pulled me in right from the start. Even though my background is pretty different from the author’s, her story of finding her way while dealing with mental health struggles really hit home for me. There were times when it felt like she was telling my story, too.

Song’s writing is spot-on—precise but still packed with emotion. She captures her experiences in such a vivid and relatable way that I couldn’t put the book down. Honestly, reading this memoir was a bit of therapy for me; it fed my soul in ways I didn’t expect.

If you’re looking for a good memoir, I highly recommend Docile: Memoirs of a Not-So-Perfect Asian Girl. It’s an easy four stars from me, and I’m sure it’ll resonate with others as well.

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for this advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest and thoughtful review.

well written and well paced. a good look at how the model minority myth and the burden of expectations can affect individuals, families and communities.
feels mean to say about someones memoir, but it wasn't that revolutionary to me. this probably isn't a book i will remember forever but i enjoyed it.

A poignant, fascinating memoir about identity, race, dreams, family expectations, and the journey to discovering the joy and pride of being true to oneself.

Not rated as it was a memoir and I always feel strange rating people's lives.

Hyeseung Song’s Docile: Memoirs of a Not-So-Perfect Asian Girl makes me want to have a memoir moment…

I really enjoyed Hyeseung honest and vulnerable story… it was heartbreaking yet hopeful… many can find themselves within the pages… with the focus on identity and expectation, told with beautiful prose. I have to recommend the audio, narrated by the author it felt like listening to art being created.

Thank you Simon Audio
