These characters weren't likable. Which can be fine, but when the central romance of the book is a triangle, there just has to be something appealing about each of the three people involved, and Ava, Alexander, and Jack just aren't it. It was clear from the first chapter that Ava doesn't love Alexander, much less like him, and he obviously felt the same about her...so why were they engaged? Okay, okay, yeah, they of course end up having an argument about this, but engagement-as-plot-device is terrible, in my opinion. I would also argue that Alexander's unlikability is a direct result of Ava's POV—his desire for routine and stability read as ASD to me, and I wasn't impressed with Ava's attitude about it, especially when she told him she wanted those things too. That conflict was entirely self-made, and she basically wanted all the sympathy for her situation. Un. Like. Able.

I really enjoyed this rom-com and it was the perfect one to end summer. I loved the setting, predictability, and main characters. I can see why it has poor reviews because it doesn’t feel super original, but for me I really enjoyed it. I especially loved the whole flight attendant aspect and the fact that it was fairly closed door of a romance.

Content notes: mainly kiss scenes/a second base moment that are descriptive, but no explicit open door scenes, wouldn’t label it a clean romance based on descriptive language used but it is cleaner than most romances out there

the main character was not particularly likeable. she wasn't great to her best friend and the reasoning behind why she didn't like the love interest was silly in my opinion. totally justified if there was a real basis behind the hatred. i also don't understand why she got with her ex-fiancé? i understand logically, but there was no emotional connection.

it was a good, quick read. it's good once you get through the first half. once they're in Belize, it's so good and the love interest was the best part.

I was in the middle of reading a very heavy book and really needed to take a (reading) mental health break.  I also wanted to squeeze in one more beach read before summer was over.  The Layover was that perfect read - quick yet also satisfying.  Bonus points for the beautiful cover.

Ava is getting married and working her last shift as a flight attendant. The catch - her nemesis, Jack, is on her trip, including their 24 hour layover in Belize. But a day in paradise reminds Ava just how much she loves her job. And her job isn't the only thing she's falling in love with.

This was SO CUTE. I want to crawl into this book and live in Belize. I want a Jack to banter and spar with. I was a Gen to keep things fun.

Ava's character was great. For a fluffy romance, I really felt she went through a pretty significant character arc. While Jack and their entire relationship was predictable, that didn't make it any less fun!

The writing style was excellent, too. Reminiscent of my other favourite romance authors, Sarah Hogle, Sally Thorne, and Emily Henry

If you've read any of my other romance reviews, you know your girl LOVES the tingles, and I definitely felt the butterflies reading this... BUT I am docking a star because I was hoping for at least one steamy scene. It was the perfect set up for it, too!

So good. Worth the read!!
