Incredible worldbuilding and really likable main characters.  *Adorable* animals.  Finally a romance where the setting and events aren't a backdrop but a part of the story!  The relationship stuff started a bit trope-full, but built up really nicely.  Cozy and realistic.  The climax/ending felt a bit out of place and out of nowhere and featured (CW!)
gun violence
, which I really don't like, but it was at least over quick.  Little bit let down we didn't get more cuteness or even a little spice once the hookup finally happened, but we can dream.

This was a somewhat polarizing book in my book club, which is funny since it's "just" a cozy fantasy. But the main character was difficult to like and root for since her debilitating social anxiety often leads her to be actively rude and mean to others. I did enjoy a lot of the zookeeping aspects of the book though, and the ending was worth getting to.

A marvelous story of a devoted mythology animal lover whom becomes more confident over time working in a magical zoo as the Phoenix Keeper. With the help of her best friend Tanya, the Kelpie Keeper, and the beautiful Luciana, the Griffin Keeper, Alia learns to over come her stage freight. Aila also becomes more smitten by the majestic, confident and beautiful Luciana. At first Aila cannot stand the perfect princess Luciana, but when Aila’s new responsibility as the Phoenix Keeper starts happening, things begin to change. If your heart melted after reading The House on the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, your heart again will melt after reading this book. As we all learned with Linus Baker, not everything is as it seems and that true bravery comes in many sizes and shapes. So come along and express your passions with Aila and her friends in the Phoenix Keeper.

Way too long with very little plot. If I had to read just how socially inept and awkward this character was one more time, I would set this book on fire. She was so annoying and whiny. Romance was rushed, mystery was predictable, and the descriptions of the MC was very repetitive.
