It is absolutely criminal that I left this sit in my TBR this long. This was absolutely stunning. The descriptions of the animals and the zoo are totally immersive and the characters are rich. I am so disappointed that I can only visit San Tamculo in my head because it sounds like a wonderful place with wonderful, magical creatures.

So Alia is a bit immature and oblivious to social queues - so what? She experiences some pretty solid growth with the support of Tanya and Teddy (and eventually Luciana, and yes, even Connor). This was all-in-all a pretty cozy experience with just a dash of a romance.

Thank you to Netgalley and Orbit for sending me a copy of this book! All opinions are my own!

Well this book was an absolute little delight! It was so cozy and heartwarming and I just felt warm and fuzzy inside every time I picked it up! From the magical animals to the lessons on hopes and dreams and self discovery, this book was like a warm hug! The romance was really cute and I loved the way it was a part of Aila's story and how she developed throughout her journey. Her journey definitely made me emotional as someone on the verge of their career dreams as well!

My only issue was the predictability of it. I generally can never guess endings, and I clocked this book from almost the start, which is telling. I wish I had been more surprised by the twists, but it was still highly enjoyable.

This was a super fun read that every cozy fantasy lover should get their hands on!

A good summer cosy read, the characters were loveable, and the author managed to write dialogue that was banter-y to inject humour without relying on banter in dialogue for humour (some authors are guilty of this!).
Really easy to read, but still interesting and immersive, and very easy to visualise.

The author’s creativity with bird species is impressive and was the best part of the book. I had to keep reminding myself that these animals don’t really exist but I know a lot about their nutritional needs.

Beyond the birds, the world building was pretty thin. Everything seemed the same as contemporary real life, just different names that are hard to keep straight because we don’t actually leave the zoo very often.

The human characters were a little tiring, which was a shame. The best friend character was by far the most interesting and likable. The main character has intense anxiety, but unfortunately this makes her very self centered? Which is a bummer because I didn’t care what happened to such a selfish person? Just because someone loves animals doesn’t make them a good person?

The “villain” is very obvious from 5)3 beginning which takes out some of the tension. And the zoo plot goes suddenly off the rails in the last 5% with poachers holding everyone up a gun point which is a GREAT ESCALATION!!!

I hope to never read “the skies and seas” as an exclamation ever again. Finally, the word “witch” was used far too many times in a book with no witches.
