Dude gropes her apropos of nothing like 15% of the way in, while she is trying to bond with the horse she's about to ride? Nothing about the context lends itself to seduction in any way, but he's weirdly surprised that she doesn't respond... is she supposed to beg him to fuck her in the stables in front of his friend and a bunch of horses, just because he grabbed her tits? like is that really what we're doing? I decided to give this book a shot, despite the premise not necessarily being my thing, which was a mistake. It decided to fail in a way that was completely unexpected for the idea of the story, so I guess points for failing in a new and creative way?

I wanted something simple and I didn’t even mind the Stockholm Syndrome premise. The writing was good, unfortunately red flags and pet peeves were piling up.
The hero abducted the heroine, drugged her, and is keeping her in his estate against her will. Obviously, despite all that there’s chemistry between them. Okay, we knew that going in.
However he did not have to pretend to be drowning to have her jump into a lake to ‘rescue’ him. He did not have to drug her later (again!) and undress her. He did it to change her into dry clothes, but it’s a lame excuse. And he should really shut up about his mistress.
Another thing, all his friends are staying at his estate too for some reason and this is turning into some weird RH situation which is not exactly my thing.
But my cue to leave was when she yelled “As I keep trying to tell all of you blasted men, I’m not like other women!”
Nope!

I loved this story! I was apprehensive at first given how the story begins--you never know what kind of turn a kidnapping will take. I was pleasantly surprised and was unable to put it down. Lauren Smith is able to captivate the reader, making you fall in love with the characters while making you wish you were the one in the story instead. I can't wait to see what love does to these rogues next.
DNF. This book opens with an innocent 18-year-old girl, Emily, on her way to a ball. She has been tricked into going without a chaperone so a group of high born rogues can kidnap her. We watch as she is terrified as she realizes what is happening, shows some spunk and tries to escape, listens to the men discuss how she belongs to one of them, is drugged, is felt up to make sure she is knocked out, and is given more drugs because she is still awake. She awakes in the home of the Duke of Essex, who has kidnapped her so he can rape and ruin her to get revenge on her uncle, who could care less about her. The duke brags to her what a great lover he’ll be. And this is THE HERO. So that was enough for me.
I don’t mind some roguish behavior, but since nothing the author could write could possibly redeem this “hero” for me, I couldn’t bring myself to keep reading. And presumably there is a whole lovely series about the other rogues who helped the duke kidnap the girl so he could rape and ruin her! No thanks. Poor Emily, to think her happily ever after is going to be with this guy.

Love the Rogues, although it took me some time to warm up to Godric, since he did use laudanum on Emily, twice!
Emily, innocent, yet feisty, is not afraid to put any of the 5 rogues in their place. Charles is flirty, Ashton is sweet and a voice of reason, Lucien is clever, behind his paper but attending to all that's happening around him, and Cedric is enamoured with Anne, Emily's best friend.
But Godric, hurt and hardened, softens under Emily's care, and they weather all the ups and downs of those against them, the most evil of which is Blankenship. Evangeline was actually my favourite, a smart, strong woman, who isn't what she seems on the surface.
Great story, interesting characters, fun read.

Poor writing, too many exclamation points, motivations made no sense, fmc immediately decided her captors were good and wanted to befriend them, mmc was arrogant and not in a good way, mmc’s friends all decided his plan was a good one and also were immediately changed by the fmc, the one friend with morals decided to let the mmc maybe rape the fmc because she said she didn’t know Greek and then she apologized to him after? All ridiculous

A bit too much “rape culture” for nowadays but all in all an enjoyable read. I loved the secondary characters and I can’t wait to read the next in the series
