Pretty slow, but the plot is intriguing.

A rather interesting read that kept my attention from the beginning. It's got a great plot and storyline. There's action, suspense, twists and turns. Overall a great first in a series.

honestly this was really entertaining and i really enjoyed reading it.

Winter was a reasonably good character, and though she may have annoyed me a bit, Jaxson made up for it. honestly, he's a miracle and one of the main things that kept me reading this book.

Atti is another one of these things. he's a close second to Jaxson in terms of my favourite characters, and i love his cats and his personality. god bless.

the third thing - something that made me laugh everytime i read his name (literally) - was Dabriel. i literally could not stop laughing whenever i read 'Dabriel' because it's just such a hilarious name. it's like Gabriel the angel but the knockoff version. ok, that sounded mean, and i'm in no way looking down upon the author or book for this name, but i just found it so, so funny.

but then there was the last dude. and i honestly really didn't like him that much. Wyatt just seemed like he was trying too hard to be the nice guy, and it was annoying.

still, all in all this was a fun and enjoyable book, and i look forward to continuing the series. thanks to amazon kindle and the author for the free book!

Whenever I go into a book, I want to like it. Every now and then there will be something I think will be enjoyable bad, but generally I read a blurb and hope it'll be my next favorite book.

Sadly, Winter's Guardian is not a good book. It's bad. It's very bad.

This is up there with [b:Sakura: A Secret Kiss|38189416|Sakura A Secret Kiss (Falling for Sakura, #1)|Alexia Praks|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1516764493s/38189416.jpg|41724490]. God help me.

The only praise I can give is that this is marked as 17+ for the age of the characters and the presence of some sexual references and swear words but it's honestly really tame.

The first thing that made itself very evident on the VERY FIRST PAGE is that this author doesn't have great writing skills. Sentences are awkward, dialogue is stilted, word choices are terrible. I can't imagine how terrible the audio book for this sounds if it's a direct reading from this because GOOD GOD not even the most silky-voiced actors could make some of this stuff sound anything but awkward as fuck. This reads like a book I would've written at the age of 14. Now, I do realize that this is a self-published work, but this author's work is EVERYWHERE now. She has like 10 series that have a good number of reviews, so she should be able to find help editing and if this was one of her first, it's a kindle series. She can always revise it and re-upload the file and have people update their copies with the new edited file.

The story isn't really anything great. It reads just like something an amateur teen writer would make. Things happen awkward and suddenly, the pacing is super fast, reactions to things are unrealistic, reasoning for things is contrived and stupid, conflict just pops up.... It's honestly a mess. For example, Winter immediately hates Wyatt and then her friend tricks her into a second date and she just goes with it after like 2 snarky lines and kisses him and they're dating and he's totally in love.

Like... what??? She literally just felt super uncomfortable around him and it took 4 lines of dialogue at dinner for her to be like "Okay I'm into you now." That's literally how young teen writers make up stories things just do 180 degree turns as the story needs it no matter how whip-lashed it leaves readers.

Winter is suddenly into Jax, suddenly into Wyatt, and then Dabriel (which is a HORRIBLE name. "Can I call you Dab?" like on what fucking planet is that even a remotely okay sounding name???) and Atti have like... hardly any part in all of this they just kinda show up once or twice to hit on Winter and then they fuck off and I feel like we're going to get into one of those situations in this reverse harem where she's basically in a love triangle with Wyatt and Jax because they don't get along and then sometimes she flirts with Dabriel and sometimes she flirts with Atti but they're not really developed as love interests and merely serve as side-characters she can sleep with and kiss and flirt with when Jax and Wyatt aren't doing it for her. Maybe the author will develop these two more in upcoming books but damn, I'm not counting on it.

Most reverse harems these days are absolute shit that develop essentially nothing so, my bar for this series is down in the muck of the earth after this book performed as sadly as most of the other ones I've read.

I don't think the idea is bad; four warring supernatural factions are prophesied to have their princes be the mates of a single girl and this will unite everyone and stop the fighting and those who are against peace will try to separate them and keep The Chosen Girl from fulfilling that destiny. But because it's not a new idea, I NEED for the characters to be developed and compelling and for the plot to at least TRY to not be "oh year vamps hate werewolves lol we're in a war." Just because I've seen these plot elements before doesn't mean you don't have to TRY to write a nicely developed plot into your narrative.

None of the characters are interesting. I can barely tell Wyatt and Jax and Atti and Dabriel apart except for the fact that Jax's #1 is "I wanna fuck you but I hate you so go die." Wyatt and Atti are basically the exact same character and Dabriel's defining feature is "I only show up for like 10 total lines in this story and my hair is white!" Like omission of a character isn't a character???? And of course Winter is just... a college girl, weirdly written by some British woman who's probably projecting.

Also, this book has casual slut shaming over dumb boy jealousies. Winter is in her temoprary "I hate Wyatt" phase and a waitress flirts with him and she's like "Ugh, you slut." and then she's like "I'm not jealous but I'm totally jealous" and I'm just irritated with her.

Alex, her best friend, exists TEN THOUSAND FUCKING PERCENT, to talk to Winter about Winter's love life with men. She fits into that "omg bff and sister and roommate" slot so that she can talk Winter into dating Wyatt and have a few sassy lines about how Winter should ride his dick and then will probably be later used as a point of drama in the story.

How much you want to bet that Alex is kidnapped by an enemy of Winter's and Winter has a hissy fit about going into a situation all alone to save her after fighting with her boyfriends and dismissing their rational argumens and then SHE gets herself into a dangerous situation where her boyfriends have to come save her and she blubbers and is like "Oh I'm so stupid!" when one of them is badly injured or the evil person uses her for some evil end and just...

*screams*

Anyway, trust me on this, you can find better paranormal romances than this with basically the exact same story line. It may not have 4 guys that the heroine will all bang but that element in this book doesn't add anything. It's as dumbly frustrating as a bad love triangle except she'll just have sex with both of them in the end.
