I was really surprised by this book-- pleasantly so. I started reading this one on a whim, mainly because it was available on Overdrive and seemed like something that I might like. What I found was a story that was very gripping. In fact it was about the best thing I've read since Devotion. It was fascinating and I was on the brink of that Seabiscuit blow by blow excitement in the pit of my stomach and couldn't wait to hear the next sentence. I'm going to highly recommend this one and I'll try to foist it on my book club people. I'm sure they'll thank me...
Awesome ride through history. Close to my heart in the way it talks about this awesome natural environment. Exciting ride through white water. I also really loved the history from further back, as well as the story of the dam's role woven in. Having only seen the grand canyon from the lip, this book puts a trip down the Colorado in a dory onto my bucket list. Highly recommend.

The Emerald Mile is a fascinating journey from beginning to end. Fedarko’s detailing of the Grand Canyon is so vivid I felt like I was reading poetry. Few authors have made me admire the setting of the story as much as Fedarko. The book may be sold on the story of an epic race down the Colorado River, and while this section is thrilling, nail-biting, and well crafted, the book is so much more than that. It details the history of the European discovery of the Grand Canyon, John Wesley Powell’s exploration of the canyon, the inner workings of the Glen Canyon Dam, and the ever-quirky river guides. I found each section of the book to be as enjoyable as the one that preceded it. By the conclusion of the race through the canyon, The Emerald Mile thoroughly proves that it is more about the journey than the destination.
I waited months for this audio from the library, like 15 months. Then started listening and realized that my mind couldn’t focus on this one right now. I am bummed.
