I found this very informative and inspirational. While I don't think I'll go to the extreme of getting my own turkeys or anything, I do have great plans to do more shopping at our local food store and farmers markets.
Absolutely loved this book! This was a good one to listen to. Highly recommend!
This is probably the book that got me into growing my own food, plus i love Kingslover. also has great recipes. Take away? I will never buy another apple from New Zealand again, EVER.
Great book about the impact of the industrial food industry on our lives and the way we eat. Their family eats only food grown in their county for a full year and it has made me more passionate about trying to eat locally as well. The articles by Kingsolver's husband and daughter add a lot to this book. If you are interested at all in eating locally, organically and/or trying to support small farmers instead of the big guys this is a MUST read :)
Took me a while to get into this book, but eventually it became so interesting I ended up really enjoying it. I feel that the virtues she feels will help save us are rapidly becoming lost arts. I would love to garden and preserve food, but I do not know how, nor do I know anyone who can teach me, and if they did, I have neither the land to grow food on, nor the space to put a winters worth of canned, frozen and dried foods. So I wonder how realistic it is. I do hope more people grow gardens instead of lawns, and that local farms can be preserved. I will continue with my sometimes local diet and see if I can find more ways to help my local farmers by getting my food from them, instead of who knows where.
I had to give up on this one. I think i made it to page 78. It's important info, to be sure, and a topic near and dear to me, but... But... Gosh. She's just so haughty about it all. It's less about her experience and more about the Industry. I think her experience, toils and tribulations (were there any?!) would have made for a better read.
Great book, full of food resources and enough starting places to help you make positive changes in the environmental footprint of your food choices. Very motivational (thinking about gardening more, despite my 'black thumb' when it comes to plants) and an overall interesting read.
Kingsolver and her family were living my dream! This book also made one of the best arguments I have heard for carnivory (as they called it).
