Has this book inspired me to visit my local farmers markets and make my own cheese? Yes. Did I order the seed catalog referenced in the book and start dreaming of a modest garden? Yes. But sadly it gets bumped down to three-stars for being way too repetitive. The entire Kingsolver family has the exact same perspective on their food journey, which makes it seem pointless to include two additional authors. Chapter after chapter all three of them repeat similar quips about climate change, fossil fuels, and local economies, which goes from preaching to the choir to downright boring.
It made me want to go out and plant things... until I remembered my charcoal thumb. (Plants don't die immediately, but they generally do not live their normal life cycle under my care.)
For starters, I love Barbara Kingsolver's writing and she didn't let me down with this book. I choose this book as an addition to my exploration of our food and where it comes from; how to eat more locally, nutritionally; and in ways more harmonious with this big beautiful earth of ours. A few people I talked with found it to be a bit tedious at times, but I was always inspired to read on and find out what the next growing season or time of year would bring to her family's table. Lots of yummy recipes too! Better to read this during the summer when a lot of the foods they (her partner and daughter also write parts) write about are more locally accessible.
This book made me think twice about what I eat. Mostly where it comes from and what it means to the economy and the people who produce the food (or the ingredients for the food) I eat.
Eating locally is a little bit trickier in AK, but this book has inspired me to do what I can. When I can't get local products, I'll try my best to select those that are pasture finished or sustainably grown.
Read it, it will make you want to go out and start growing your own food!

This book was awesome! I really enjoyed it and am inspired to start learning more about my local food economy.
The premise of the book is great, the political rhetoric turned me off. MMD reading challenge: a book you previously abandoned.
3.5 stars.
I’ve never regretted reading a Kingsolver book. I learned so much about harvest and food production — call me a locavore convert!
Would recommend this to anyone who enjoyed Braiding Sweetgrass.
