I love a lot of Kingsolver's work, but not this one. It was inspirational and made me want to change my ways. But I did not find it entertaining.

I've always been a bit of a locavore, and this book helped me understand just what it takes to live seasonally and do the work. I found it insightful and inspiring as I get ready to plan my garden for next year.

Kingsolver is one of my favorite authors, but somehow I thought this might be full of lectures and holier-than-thou. But in typical Kingsolver fashion it was entertaining, full of great stories, and included history in such a way that you don't realize you're actually learning something. I love that she acknowledges that her choice to go live in a rural area and try to eat locally for a full year is something many can't do, but she still makes a great case for it.

A memoir of the year of a family growing their own food on a farm in Virginia. Along with recipes and stories about what was required to complete this challenge, the book also examines some of the political implications of factory farming and a society that is increasingly disconnected from the source of our food.

informative medium-paced

I read this book after a doctoral candidate recommended it back when I was in undergrad. That was a time when minimum wage was $8 an hour in California. I liked the idea of the book, but I couldn't help but feel that it was written from a place of privilege. I simply couldn't fathom trying to live the life the book was about. It was definitely inspiring, something to aspire to, but I subscribe to the idea that if something is inaccessible, it is not revolutionary.

Love love loved! I want to live that life: moving to the mountains and living off my own land sounds pretty amazing.

Wonderful book about getting off the grid and how easy it can be. Kingsolver takes food to a spiritual level. More people should consider food in this way.
