Should’ve read some of the reviews first. Contained more erotic content than I am comfortable with.

I really enjoyed the overall feeling of this book! The integration of culture, the focus on women, the generational difference, etc were all themes I thought more about after finishing and between chapters! I think the thing that didn’t make this a 5 was how many of the women’s stories were included. Idk if that’s a hot take but I got so bored of them and couldn’t picture anything but old people getting it! Which good for old people, we all deserve love buttttt I didn’t enjoy that part and felt like there could’ve been half the amount of stories and been a better book!

This book is both conservative and liberal at the same time! It is both Culturaly sensitive and culturally liberating… it is both sensual and respectable! If you want to read a book that is about family loyalty finding your own way being respectful to your culture while fighting for liberation and woman’s equality this book is for you!

The title nearly kept me away! Yikes! The story is actually much more than the intimate short stories that are peppered throughout this novel. A group of illiterate women want to learn to write English, and boy, do they write! Friendship, women who have been told by their culture they mustn’t remarry, a culture of arranged marriages & the deep need to be loved, noticed & touched. While not my typical choice, I enjoyed the storyline & all that it teaches of the Punjabi/Sikh culture!

Absolutely loved this novel!!!!!! A wonderful story that gives a glimpse into the Punjabi culture in Southall, London. The story brings us into the lives of a several generations of Punjabi women providing a glimpse into the cultural aspect of women's roles in a traditional and modern sense. As I love for each reader to have a chance to read novels with out spoiling to much. I highly recommend this story to all. While reading I experienced a range of emotions. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did :( the premise is so interesting and I found the beginning gripping. However, it became predictable in my opinion. As a reader, I felt like a lot was being explained to me that could have been a show, not a tell.

Nonetheless, a fun read that I enjoyed!
