Wow.. this was gross in multiple parts.  Elio compared the peach to a SA victim🧐 I’m glad the film cut out the problematic bits. This book just felt like the author writing down his weird fetishes
The movie overall is better and this book just felt creepy and the author is a self proclaimed pedophile so take that as you will

the prose in this book was insanely beautiful, and the story did really tug on my heartstrings at times. and THE LAST PARAGRAPH holy shit. however, there were some elements in this book that did make me quite uncomfortable, and for that i don’t think i can comfortably give this 5 stars.

Maybe a hot take but the book doesn't compare to the movie. In fact, the only real pleasure I got out of this was in imagining the movie while I was reading. I'm probably a biased reviewer because CMBYN is my favorite movie maybe of all time. I can't stop thinking about how André Aciman had something to say about her Virginia Woolf is overrated and this is his claim to fame. It's heavy handed and corny. The movie is a masterpiece and this pales in comparison. I think the movie did an amazing job curating the best moments of this, capturing its essence and none of the bad stuff. It is a lot raunchier than the movie, which adds a nice twist of knowledge to what was left out of the movie.

Reminded me a lot of Jeanette Winterson's Written on the Body—the same intensity and passion and wild tortured feeling tempered by introspection. Quite beautiful, but not particularly for me with the graphic, visceral physicality of it.
