This book was a gross display of a predator using his power and influence over a teenager to completely twist and warp his mind. To the degree where he spends his entire life being in love and obsessed with this man. Meanwhile the predator had his fun with a child and then moved on with his life like he wasn't even a blip on it. Would not recommend reading unless you are someone who likes reading about that sort of thing... In that case... Have fun I guess

i didn’t actually finish the book. because i can’t. armie hammer’s narration, while wonderful, cannot salvage this weird, borderline pedophilic shit show. elio is obsessive and crazy with his crush on oliver, which was funny at first bc i knew teenagers who acted just like that when i was in high school. but, then it got creepy. in ways that made me want to vomit. i will not elaborate.

I loved the the detail and writing style was beautiful. I just wish that the plot wasn’t so messy at moments and that it ended on a better note. I wanted more from this that I just didn’t get. But overall it was written quite beautifully and you can feel the passion behind the words. Definitely changed my view on apricots....

DNF. I do not understand how people love this book. It makes me sad I don't love this because so many people recommended this. I got about 50% of the way through and just couldn't finish. Elio (POV character) is honestly creepy. You are in Elio's head as he is obsessing over Oliver who is a house guest in Elio's family home. This is giving obsessive stalker vibes. I am not a fan and won't be picking this back up. I am so disappointed.

Oh me. I had once been Elio. Elio was me. In a sense that I take familiarity in his longing for someone he thought he loved. But was it really love? I beg to differ. For me it was merely teenage infatuation when the hormones were at their strongest.
Aciman wrote the prose so beautifully and artfully. Some say that they find the narrative pretentious. I can see where they're coming from, considering the author seems to drown the readers with endless literary and classical art references. But I didn't mind it. I'd soaked myself in them as though it was a warm honey.
What I loved most about it though was the thorough, carefully, and delicately worded observation of a juvenile, burning with desire and aching passion for someone we were once strongly attracted to, at least once in our younger lives. Aciman put this emotion under a microscope and held it out against the morning light when it's the brightest, so that our eyes could clearly see what it is as much as feel it for ourselves.
Easily a favorite read. Would even say it's up there on my top 5! Only for one thing: I thought the last part unnecessarily dragged on and would have preferred the movie ending. Either way, I can understand why this book is named one of the modern classics.
