I didn't think I would like it as much as I did. In fact, I thought I would hate it. The very beginning of the novel was very offputting to me. I didn't want to continue after the first "unit" or "like." It was challenging to get through the dialogue, but I soon caught onto it. Getting toward the end of the novel my view shifted. I even got a little emotional.
Overall a great book! Wouldn't recommend it if you're not into difficult-to-understand dialogue though ;)

Feed is a dystopian young adult science-fiction story. Titus and his friends head to the moon for a party like every other day but a hacker causes all of their feeds to malfunction this time including an intelligent girl, Violet, who hasn’t always had the feed. It’s a smart, satirical story that explores consumerism, star-crossed teenage love, and identity crises. The audiobook for this story is highly recommended in order to receive a full understanding of how these feeds are implanted into their brains and function. Feed is entertaining to teens and adults through its use of language and a unique and unsettling view of our future.
good, fast, dystopian fiction of a teen who grows up dependent on their "feed" - worth reading to consider, FB and other sources of our media bubbles.. What do we want to agree to (and how valuable is advertising really)?

Overall this was a decent enough exploration of the power of language in fighting against consumerism and the rise of anti-intellectualism. M.T. Anderson's world is concise but compelling enough as a picture of a society reduced to its hedonistic urges, avoiding complicated thought, and even being unable to resist doing so due to the narrowness of their language. This is a society that has become so corrupted by corporations that it is controlled to focus on what they want it to focus on. As someone addicted to social media, I definitely saw a bit of myself in the people on the feed, constantly streaming slop and meaningless content, and I'm honestly surprised to find that this was released in 2002. Now, while on paper this sounds incredible, I did feel like it was all explored in a surface-level manner here, and that the plot was particularly quite cliche and predictable, offering little spice beyond what has already been explored in much more meaningful books such as 1984. I found a lot of Violet's moralising to be quite annoying and unnatural, feeling inauthentic most of the time. A lot of the thoughts the author clearly intended to be meaningful instead felt quite plastic. The sequence where the protagonist gets high was in particular quite cringe-worthy, as well as the author's consistent use of polysyndetons, which I don't typically like even in the best of circumstances. However, I was ultimately slightly won over by the ending, which did touch my cold-hearted experience of the novel enough for me to give it a 3 star rating.
An intriguing and thought-provoking teen #dystopian novel about an eerily possible future. Excellent on audio! REad my full review and listen to a sample of the audio:

Couldn’t get attached to the characters. No clue what some of the made up slang meant. Wish I could’ve understood a little more about how Earth looked and how it was situated. Wasn’t really drawn into the book - had to struggle to finish. Violet’s death at the end was completely rushed and the spat they had just felt unnecessary. Titus was an unlovable character.
