“if incarceration had come to define the lives of men from impoverished neighborhoods, eviction was shaping the lives of women”

“poor black men were locked up, poor black women were locked out”

an informative, compelling, and powerful read. this was an eye-opening book into the lives of those impacted by poverty and broken systems. this book showcased how so many individuals and families are struggling because of these broken systems and regulations. if you think people can simply "pick themselves up by their bootstraps", i strongly urge you to read this book.

some of the stories blended together and i found it hard to distinguish them, but maybe that was the point all along - to show how similar these situations truly are.

overall, this was heartbreaking, fascinating, and a powerful read. everyone should read this book!

This book is well written and researched. It opened my eyes to poverty and housing issues. I like the way the stories were told, however I had to listen to them with breaks. Because of that, some of the stories started to blend together. I highly recommend the audiobook as well.
