Ace-High Royal Flush is a reflection of Jefferson Sebring’s life as he gets ready to take one of the biggest steps to make that life complete. He gives us not only a look at himself but the Sebring siblings: Tony, Bryan, Portia. We get to see how siblings have to care for each other with parents who seem cold, uncaring and worried more about status and how, as the boys grew up, they took different paths in the military service, following in the family history to become members of the intelligence community. Jefferson became a CIA officer.

After graduation, Portia was sent to London by her father, as he felt this would benefit country and family. When her oldest brother, Tony, receives a letter from her, he becomes concerned about a person she has befriended. Tony calls a meeting with their father, brother Bryan, and Jefferson. Jefferson sort of volunteers to go to London and spy on Portia, and this is the first time that he sees Ludovic Rivenhall.

Ludovic Rivenhall is a friend to Portia Sebring, and Jefferson doesn’t know where Ludovic fits into Portia’s life. Jefferson overlooks Ludovic, at first, and becomes involved with Bart Freeman. The first time Jefferson and Ludovic become involved is at a sad time. This is when James Trevalyn loses the love of his life, Jeremy Waters (Greater Love Hath No Man). But unfortunately, Jefferson continues his affairs even though Ludovic has been there for him, and was involved in Portia’s wedding to Nigel Mann as well as the birth of their son. But Ludovic is no fool, he’s well aware of Jefferson’s reputation and affairs, and he finally puts Jefferson in his place.

Tinnean really gives us an extensive look at the Sebring family history: marriages, births, divorces, domineering parents, independent siblings, tragedy and love. It was especially nice to see Portia grow up, get married to Nigel Mann and bring Quinton into the world. Again, another solid spin-off story from the Spy vs. Spook series.
