My honest review was provided in exchange for an ARC on NetGalley. Thank you, Saga Press, for giving me this ARC!
3/5
I wanted to like this book, but I could not get into it. The writing style seemed interesting at first, but I quickly got tired of Bob’s humor. It reminded me of Dungeon Crawler Carl, which I did not enjoy either (and DNF’ed for problematic language). I think that’s more a reflection of me, though, since DCC is beloved by many. If you like that style, or something like Django Wexler’s How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying, you might enjoy this book too.
I do think this would make a fantastic audiobook, so I would like to try experiencing this story through that medium. Just to see if it changes my opinion.
The premise is good though, regardless of prose. Bob, a former human, is now disembodied sentience, tasked by his authoritarian overlords to find a new home for humans. The story does a decent job exploring concepts like existentialism and agency, which is a nice touch. And there are some really cinematic action sequences. But, sadly, these weren’t enough to elevate this for me. I think I just don’t like this style of book, so I will probably stop picking these kind of books up.

I love the way the author does hard sci-fi. Reminds me of Andy Weir. The world building is fantastic. However, I do think the later half of the book gets a little repetitive. But I am so excited to read the next books in the series. One of the best sci fi books I’ve read this year!
The rating is for the whole trilogy - it is a fun, solid young adult space opera.

A sentient spaceship? I have to admit that it took me a while to start this series because the premise of a sentient spaceship did not excite me. Or, more accurately, I didn't know how one could make this concept work and I was afraid of being disappointed. Boy, I was wrong! I love this entire series and I am fully invested in this cloned consciousness inhabiting spaceships. I have to admit I have a soft spot for Bill.
