Byatt is one of those authors whose writing I find completely absorbing. You're taken into another world entirely. Well-crafted, escapist literary fiction.

I saw the movie adaptation of this in 90s. As well, I really liked possession. I read this a couple of times ages ago, and I decided to revisit it again. Overall I liked the tale of the first story in this collection. The plotting is good. At times, she was heavy on description of insect life and nature. Some of it I liked. I liked the more philosophical bits about nature, especially the parts that link to the underlining plot of story. There were moments of brilliance about this narrative. I wanted to like the second story but I just couldn't get into it. She drowns sometimes in the details and surroundings with very little story telling. I plan on reading a lot of her stuff as I bought some of her catalogue earlier this year. I hope it focuses more on people. I give this one a 4/5.

This book contains two stories:

Morpho Eugenia is a story about family secrets, passions, and metamorphosis. I can't really give too much away here, but the character William is working for the Alabaster family, and falls for the eldest daughter. Things are not what they seem.

As much as I loved the first novella, I couldn't seem to get in to the second one.

I was engrossed in the first novella, "Morpho Eugenia" but, man! The second novella, "The Conjugal Angel" was one of the most boring pieces of writing I have ever read! All this conjugal talk and flowery prose and I just kept thinking when will it end!
