This was an interesting retelling of the original story by Margaret Atwood. Obviously everything is condensed but we get all the main plot points with lots of the emotion and fear seen via the imagery. The artwork is very beautiful and I enjoyed the watercolour aspect to some of the illustrations. The use of various colour palettes and background colours to denote time periods was very clever too. Overall I enjoyed this book, having the context of having read the original meant I flew through the story and found it very easy to read.

Powerful, moving, involving. It was my first meeting with Gilead, but I want to dive into the universe deeper and discover the original Atwood's books and maybe the tv series? I really liked the style of the visual interpretation and the world's creation

This graphic adaptation is visually beautiful and conveys the dystopian tone and social complexities of the story in a way that enhanced my appreciation for Atwood's novel. (I haven't seen the TV series) There is enough discretion in the visual details that much is left to the reader's imagination, yet the horror of the story's reality is not diminished. This is dark, depressing stuff, especially since the fiction is not far enough away from the facts.
There's no happy ending

Now I get why this book had its moment of fame recently. It is very well written, with an omnipresent irony that makes the violence, the horror of the book more bearable. It is not only the horrible likeliness of the books universe to ours that makes it so understandably a success, it is also the world Atwood built: full of colours, sentiment impregnating every corner, souvenirs intertwined with the hardships of the main character’s dull and fearful present.
This féminine dystopia is not much about the state as an authoritarian institution, but about how power can lie within the most important and vital of things: words, language and the symbols that carry it. It is not only a feminist and feminine staple (even if Atwood denies it), it is also a warning from the near future, which is what the author intended.

Great adaptation of the novel. Even though the art style wouldn't be my first choice otherwise, it really fits the story.
