I listened to this as an audio book. I would not recommend that particular method....The large cast was quite unusual. But the book was awesome. I'd definitely recommend it. I'll definitely be reading it again. (But READING it. Not any of this audio book business.)

Tenille bought me this book for my birthday. I read it all in one day. I loved it!! Super cute, super fun.

UPDATE: Read it again in August 2019. I couldn't remember a lot of the story, so it was kind of like reading it again. Such a cute book.

A long time ago I was given this book. It was personalized and signed by the author. I tried to read it. I got through the first 2 chapters and forgot about it. I did this several times. I love the author, and wasn't sure why this wasn't working for me. With the sequel coming out this month I decided to try again. Now, I am not sure what my problem was.

It is a sweet coming of age story. I am pretty sure Ms. Hale has a thing for languages (or speak, as it tends to be called), hardly a book she writes goes without the introduction of a new one. This was a different than I expected and definitely not as girly. Interesting that the message I kept getting was that I need to be a mom. Being a mom to my children is important because no one else can do it but me. Weird that I took that away from a book about a girl in her early teens. Definitely worth my time, but I still like Goose Girl better. ;)

The characters are really three dimensional and the story is very cool. The song snippets at the beginning of every chapter are brilliantly written. This is really really good. I LOVE THIS BOOK.

Re-read July 2012. It's been several years since I've read Princess Academy, but it's just as wonderful now as it was the first time. Shannon is a master at blending gorgeous prose with action and emotion. A beautiful story full of layers and depth, always worth revisiting.

Miri is a small teenage girl from the mountains. She feels inadequate in her village because she isn't allowed to help in the quarry, the lifeblood of trade. She tries her best to help every way she can, but she just knows that everyone must think she's a burden.

One day, with the spring traders, a delegate from the faraway court arrives. He announces that the priests have divined that the prince will find his princess in their village. All girls between the ages of 12 and 18 must go down the mountain to where a Princess Academy has been set up to teach them all that they must know to be fit to be a princess.

This wasn't my favorite of Shannon Hale's books (That would be Goose Girl, followed closely by Book of a Thousand Days), but I still liked it. I felt that it had a good message for young girls about learning what you can, speaking up for yourself and others, helping others, and being happy with your own talents instead of focusing on what you can't do. It did all this without being preachy in the least.

I liked the girls. Miri was by far the most well-developed, but they all had their little (or big) dreams. They are of course changed by their lessons but they still remain true to who they were before. Miri was a plucky little thing and I admired her courage.

I suspected how everything would end up from really early on, but I still enjoyed the journey to get there.

I highly recommend this for tween girls.

The magic was really cool, and I was glad there wasn't one of those messages where one type of girl was seen as "less" than the others. It had great messages about friendship. The excitement with

Slow start and a little young for a near 30 year old but I enjoyed it! A great book for young girls.
