I get that a lot of people read this for the first time and call it outdated, but they forget it was written in 1990.
I was born in 1975, and this book took me back to the 90's cop shows. What a gem this was, taking me back in time.

This is my first read by this author. A friend recommended it to me after asking what by Patricia Cornwell would be a good starting point. Kay Scarpetta couldn’t be a better written character. She is strong, independent and very intelligent. I love the way kay thinks. I think this is going to become one of my favorite series.

Medical examiner Kay Scarpetta is at the forefront of uncovering clues in a murder of a suspected serial killer.  Kay is juggling her personal life with her niece Lucy and a hidden relationship with a man she works with.  As the murders become to come more frequently, Kay finds herself not only investigating but getting thrown under the bus to take the fall.  With an unlikely ally she ends up discovering the truth behind who is doing the murders but will she be able to figure it in time to save herself and her career.

Highly entertaining.  It is a bit dated in some sense with the way things were tolerated back then but shouldn't have been.  Kay is a strong woman who you find yourself compelled to understand.  Interesting dynamics throughout the whole story.  Edge of you seat thriller.

As I read Kathy Reichs, Jefferson Bass, Karin Slaughter and Tess Gerritsen it was a logical step to read Patricia Cornwell.
One of the things that stopped me so far, was the number of books in the series, as I like to begin at the beginning.
This was spot on, a fast paced page turner and what really interested me, was her use of computers, as I started my education during that time, using nearly the same setup (dumb terminals, LAN, modem, PC etc.) and her descriptions are faultless, which I really appreciate.
This also leads to the introduction of the character I like most: Lucy.
The ending is ok, for a first book.
Highly recommended, fast page-turner. As real as it gets.

Why have I waited so long to read these books? Excellent mystery! I think the thing I love the most is the time capsule quality to it. Early 90's forensics and smoking. I wonder if these will serve as a benchmark for forensic science as the years continue to pass. I loved every minute of it.
